Hotel to be Built at Site of Five Points Music Hall

A Pelham hotelier is planning to build a $15 million, seven-story hotel in the heart of Birmingham's Five Points South neighborhood, the project's developer and an architect said Wednesday.

A plan to demolish the former Five Points Music Hall building on 20th Street South and build a Homewood Suites hotel won preliminary approval from the Birmingham Design Review Committee on Wednesday. Homewood Suites is an extended-stay hotel and part of the McLean, Va.-based Hilton Hotels & Resorts chain.

Details of the design still must be approved and it could be up to two years before construction begins, said Rakesh Patel, whose Pelham-based AUM Enterprises Inc. is managing the project.

Patel, who declined to identify the hotel's prospective owner other than to say it is someone who owns other Birmingham hotels, said the nearby former Five Points YMCA building would be demolished to provide secure parking.
