For the first time in the history of Egypt, a woman is running for president. Bothaina Kamel is her name and she calls herself “a girl of a the revolution.”
Kamel was the host of a call-in radio show called “Nighttime Confessions,” before venturing into the world of politics. The show covered sexual abuse, extramarital affairs, and was removed from the airwaves in 1998 for “damaging the reputation of Egypt and its youth.”
But despite the government’s efforts to silence her, she made the move to satellite television, cast her vote to amend the Egyptian Constitution for the country’s first contested presidential elections in 2005 and is now running for president.
Kamel really is a girl of the revolution.
